AI Might Soon Outthink Every Human: Dario Amodei, founder of Anthropic—the company behind the AI Claude—has just released a 38-page essay titled “The Adolescence of Technology.” In it, he warns that humanity is approaching a moment of unprecedented power—and unprecedented risk.
Amodei writes that “humanity is about to be handed almost unimaginable power,” but it’s unclear if our social, political, and technological systems are ready to handle it. He is particularly concerned about AI-enabled authoritarianism and the possibility of ordinary people gaining the capabilities of highly trained experts.
He draws a chilling parallel to the 1995 Tokyo subway sarin attack, noting that AI could turn “a disturbed loner who wants to kill people” into someone capable of mass destruction. In one test, Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.5 was even asked to help reconstruct a challenging virus, highlighting just how powerful AI is becoming.

Amodei warns that if AI keeps improving at its current pace, it may soon surpass humans in almost every area. He imagines a “country of geniuses” emerging by 2027—millions of people far smarter than today’s top scientists or leaders, operating hundreds of times faster than humans. Such a scenario, he says, could be “the single most serious national security threat we’ve faced in a century, possibly ever.”
Yet Anthropic continues to build this AI and make it widely available, even offering it to the U.S. government for $1 per year. Critics argue that if society isn’t ready for AI’s power, unrestricted access may be reckless.
Amodei’s essay is a warning, a challenge, and a call for reflection: are we ready for the power we’re creating?
