Medford Dunkin’ Franchisee Close, 63 Jobs Impacted: A Medford facility affiliated with one of Massachusetts’ largest Dunkin’ franchise operators is set to close, resulting in 63 job losses, according to a state filing. The site, operated by Medford CPL Inc. and owned by Couto Management Group, is scheduled to shut down by March 17.
Couto Management Group, founded in 1986 with its first Dunkin’ location in Allston, now operates multiple Dunkin’ outlets across the state, spanning from the North Shore to Cape Cod, according to the company’s website.
The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification submitted to the state on Friday indicates that 13 of the employees are truck drivers represented by Teamsters Local 25, while the remaining 50 plant workers are non-union.
Medford’s assessor records show that the food processing facility at 93 Mystic Ave. covers more than 14,000 square feet. The property, purchased in 2002 by 93 Mystic Ave LLC for just over $2 million, lists Couto Management’s founder as a manager. The city’s most recent assessment values the site at $3.5 million.
Requests for comment from Dunkin’ headquarters and Couto Management Group were not returned. Teamsters Local 25 also did not respond to requests for comment.
This closure comes shortly after another major doughnut plant opened in Haverhill last year under a different operator. That facility, which replaced a smaller North Reading plant, led to the layoff of 74 workers in September.
The Haverhill plant, now producing about a million pastries daily, is expanding and even drew attention in December when neighbors raised concerns about the strong doughnut aroma.
